Miami Hurricanes Sports

The University of Miami Hurricanes football program has one of the strongest traditions in the nation. The school played its first game on Oct. 30, 1926 against Rollins College, winning 7-0. The coach was Howard Buck, who went 15-10-2 in three seasons. The Hurricanes, who wear orange, green and white uniforms, reached national prominence when they won their national title in 1983 under coach Howard Schnellenberger. It was the first of five championships, winning in 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001. The `91 championship was shared with the University of Washington. While becoming a college power, the Hurricanes established a reputation of being a "bad-boy" program. Their brash and trash-talk on the teams that featured outspoken players such as Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp and Clinton Portis was backed up on the field. From 1926-37, the Hurricanes played home games at Tamiami Park and Moore Park until moving to the historic Orange Bowl the following year.
